Tip Calculator with Tax — Free Online
This tip calculator includes a separate tax field so you can split a restaurant bill correctly even when tax is itemised on the check. Enter your subtotal, the tax (either as a percentage or a dollar amount), pick a tip percentage, and (optionally) the number of people splitting — you get the tip, total, and per-person share instantly.
How to Calculate Tip With Tax
There are two common conventions for handling tax when tipping:
- Tip on subtotal (pre-tax) — most etiquette guides recommend this. You tip a percentage of the food/drink cost only, not on the tax. This is the default in our calculator.
- Tip on total (post-tax) — many people round up or tip on the after-tax amount because it's simpler. Slightly more generous; servers don't object.
Mathematically: tip = subtotal × tip_percent, then total = subtotal + tax + tip. If you'd rather tip on the total, just enter the post-tax amount as the "Bill" value.
How Much Tax Should You Expect?
US state sales tax on restaurant meals varies from 0% (Oregon, Delaware, New Hampshire, Montana, Alaska) to over 10% (parts of Chicago, Seattle, Birmingham). Most US states fall between 5% and 9%. In countries like the UK, Australia, and most of Europe, sales tax (VAT/GST) is already included in the menu price — you generally do not need to add it separately.
Common Tip Percentages by Service Type
- Sit-down restaurant — 18-20% for good service (US standard)
- Buffet / counter service — 10% is generous; many round up instead
- Bars — $1-2 per drink, or 15-20% on a tab
- Food delivery — 10-20% on the food subtotal, with $5 minimum
- Taxi / rideshare — 10-20% on the fare
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal. Many people tip on the post-tax total because it's simpler — both are acceptable; the second is slightly more generous to the server.
How do I split tip and tax fairly between friends?
Use the "Split between" field. The calculator divides the total (subtotal + tax + tip) evenly so everyone pays the same share. If one person ordered much more, they should pay their own subtotal plus a proportional tax/tip share.
Why do I sometimes see automatic gratuity on large parties?
Many restaurants automatically add an 18% gratuity for parties of 6 or more. If you see "service charge" or "gratuity included" on the bill, an additional tip is optional — only add more if the service was exceptional.
Does tip count toward total tax?
No. Sales tax is calculated on the subtotal before tip. The tip is given directly to the server and is taxed on the server's income, not yours.
